Advantages of Laser Hair Removal Treatments

Laser hair removal treatments were performed tentatively for about twenty years before they received FDA clearance, and became commercially viable in 1995. Laser hair removal treatments are also at times referred to as photo-tricholysis or photo-epilation. Laser epilation pulses an intense laser beam on the skin, impairing the hair follicles, without damaging the surrounding skin. This process also known as selective photo-thermolysis is the primary principle behind laser epilation.

Rapid progressions made in laser hair removal treatments, now offer permanent and effective reduction of unwanted body hair, with long-lasting results. At any given point of time, each of the hair follicle is in one of the three growth stages. The active stage referred to as the 'anagen' phase, regressive stage called the 'categen' phase, and resting stage or the 'telogen' phase. Laser hair removal treatments are most effective at immobilizing the actively growing hairs during anagen phase.

It is during this 'active stage' that the hair follicle contains the highest level of melanin, the target of the laser beam. The length of growth cycle differs from person to person. Thus, laser hair removal treatments are customized for each individual to obtain optimal effects.

Laser epilation can be performed on almost every section of the body, both for men and women. The key areas for women usually are underarm and bikini line hairs, chin and facial hairs to larger sections for men such as hairs on shoulders, chest, back or legs. Laser hair removal treatments are non-invasive with few complications, and feel like a soft tingling, painless sensation across the skin. Compared to traditional hair removal techniques, such as shaving, waxing or electrolysis, laser epilation provides long-lasting relief. A single laser treatment can destroy up to thirty percent of hair follicles in the area or section treated. Three separate treatments destroy about half of the hair follicles in the section treated, thereby providing a fifty percent reduction in hair growth.

Though laser treatments offer relatively faster and painless epilation, no form of laser is capable of everlasting hair removal without scarring. Additionally, laser hair removal technique has still not been perfected and remains largely unregulated. Thus, there is no plausible evidence to suggest that the laser method is completely safe or effective in the longer run.
